Now you too can drive a fantastically affordable used Renault Clio thanks to the outstanding quality and exceptional prices of the pre-owned Clio cars sold at Group1 Renault in Stellenbosch and Johannesburg. First launched in 1990, and currently, in its fifth generation, the Renault Clio has established itself in South Africa and other countries as a sporty, reliable and affordable hot hatchback. So much so in fact that it has even been credited with restoring Renault’s reputation and stature as a quality automobile manufacturer after a tumultuous sales period in the 1980’s. The popularity of this car is the stuff of automotive legends and the Renault Clio is to date one of only two cars that have ever been voted European Car of the Year twice.
5th Generation Renault Clio

---|---|
The fifth-generation Renault Clio was introduced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, marking a notable evolution in the iconic model’s lineage. This iteration, despite maintaining some exterior similarities with its predecessors, is essentially a 100 percent new car, boasting a range of enhancements and innovations. A standout feature of the fifth-generation Clio is its revamped interior, which utilises higher-quality materials and finishes, particularly in the higher trim levels. The introduction of sporty seats and a redesigned, more compact steering wheel add to the overall driving experience. In a departure from conventional expectations for new model releases, Clio V is shorter than its predecessor by 14mm and sits lower by up to 30mm. Beneath its sleek exterior is a new B-segment platform, as used by others in the Renault-Nissan Alliance. On higher trim levels, the Clio V can be equipped with a range of advanced safety and convenience features. These include an electric parking brake, a wireless smartphone charger, a 360-degree camera system, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, and automatic emergency braking. Did You Know? For the first time in its history, the Clio comes equipped with a fully digital dashboard. This means you get a customisable TFT instrument display and a large touchscreen in the centre console—actually, the biggest Renault has ever put in any of its cars. |

4th Generation Renault Clio

The current fourth-generation Renault Clio, which is also sometimes referred to as the Clio IV, was first unveiled to an unsuspecting public at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Sales of the Clio 4 commenced a month later. It was the first Clio to feature a “hidden” rear door in the 5-door Clio hatchback version, a design style that has now become common across many other vehicle manufacturer models, including the Nissan Juke and Hyundai Veloster. This fourth generation Clio is a completely different vehicle to any other Clio that came before it, and its extended wheelbase has pushed the Clio into the compact car class, which is a continuation of the growth phase first seen in the previous generation of Renault Clio. Did You Know? This generation of Clio sports a whole range of new equipment that makes this car so much more than it Clio predecessors and competitors. This includes luxury and safety upgrades such as hands-free, rear camera connectivity, a Renault R-Link infotainment system, and an improved sports gearbox. |

3rd Generation Renault Clio

First unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, the third-generation Renault Clio was built on a platform created by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. It was considerably larger than the previous generations of Renault Clio’s and was also a massive 130 kg heavier. The reason for this was simple – not only was the Clio outgrowing its supermini class background, but it was also relaunched as a distinctly more upmarket car than the previous two generations. Right from the beginning the third generation Clio was marketed as a safe car, and this was backed up by a 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating, which is the highest possible safety rating a vehicle can receive. Sales commenced in October 2005 and ended in 2014, with this generation undergoing numerous upgrades and facelifts over its 9-year lifespan. The most notable of these facelifts was in 2009, which saw an almost completely new car being released thanks to the use of better quality interior materials and improved interior and exterior features and specs than the pre-facelift model. Did You Know? The third-generation Renault Clio was voted the European Car of the Year for 2006, making it the first car to win this award twice (the first time it won was in 1991). |

2nd Generation Renault Clio

The second generation Renault Clio was the direct result of one of Renault’s biggest development programs, which commenced in 1991. Codenamed the X65 program, a final design was approved at the end of 1993 and immediately went into pre-production. The final car was launched on the 11th of April 1998 to much fanfare and the approval of critics. At its launch, the second-generation Clio was one of the most affordable vehicles available in Europe at that time. The low cost of the Clio was thanks in part to the use of new and improved vehicle building materials, which included plastic and aluminium. During its production run the second-generation Renault Clio received facelifts in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Due to the popularity of the Clio 2 this model is still in production in Argentina and Columbia to this day. In fact, it received numerous updates in 2012, which has helped to bring it more in line with the current 4th generation Clio which is available in South Africa. Did You Know? In 1999 Renault released a sedan version of the second generation Clio called the Clio Symbol or the Clio Classic (depending on where in the world you purchased it). It was even rebadged as the Nissan Platina in Mexico. It was a big hit in the countries in which it was sold because sedans at this time sold better than hatchbacks in the developing countries in which the Renault Clio Sedan was marketed. |

1st Generation Renault Clio

Over 8 years the first generation of Renault Clio helped launch the Renault brand as an international motoring icon, and in the process defined a generation of young drivers. Fun to drive, easy on the eye and immensely affordable, the first-generation Clio quickly became the “go-to” car for drivers who wanted a reliable runaround that did not cost the earth. The much-loved TV commercial campaign for the Clio during this period featured two main characters, Nicole and Papa, and is still counted as one of the most effective car advertising campaigns. During its production run, there were 3 different phases of Clio’s release, each with a distinctive change in looks and features. The Phase Three Clio’s had the most noticeable styling changes thanks to rounded headlights, more pronounced bonnet curves, a tailgate that incorporated a third brake light, and a new font used to brand the Clio name badge. Did You Know? It was the first generation of Renault Clio’s that gave birth to the Clio Williams. This limited release car (only 3800 units were originally going to be manufactured) proved to be so popular that Renault released 1600 more. Named after the Renault-Williams racing team (which at the time was dominating motor racing), a further two generations were released, called the Clio Williams 2 and Clio Williams 3. These cars turned out to be exceptionally good rally cars and can still be seen racing today more than 2 decades later. |
